02 X DESCRIPTION

The Cloud is space that becomes matter, a suspended structure just like a cloud. The boundary between space and matter is, in architecture, always subtle. In this project, an installation for the “MUCC, Murcia Ciudad Creativa”, the September festival in Murcia (Spain), it is barely perceptible.

The main idea is to create a structure that looks really suspended in this area. It supports a sequence of barrier-free spaces made by canvases (nothing like walls, static panels or other). The result is a highly chameleon-like installation that can quickly turn into any kind of need: it is easy to carry, easy to assemble and easy to reuse, in fact the program involves the use of easily assembled and/or recyclable materials.

It is located in the “Cuartel de Artilleria”, a peripheral area of the city of Murcia, surrounded by four historic buildings such as the “Museo de la Universidad”, the music school and the municipal library.

The white mesh cover, The Cloud, is made of easily assembled metal bars. It represents the cloud and it is the suspended structure, as it seems fluctuate in the air and from which red canvases hang.

The cover is supported by 6 “pillars”, also modulated as the cover, and shielded by red canvases. Inside, there are service spaces and small temporary accommodation created using the pallet, a very common and easily recyclable material. The result is a labyrinthine space consisting of red canvases supported by a cover that seems to fluctuate.

In the centre, there is the “liveliest” area of the suspended structure, where you can create different spaces by modifying the position of the canvases: this is where the active spaces of the festival come to life, such as the spaces for the masterclass celebration, conferences and concerts or urban ateliers.

The model is made of simple and perishable materials: the metal structure is made of aluminium wires; the canvases are made of a very malleable and light metal, suitably coloured magenta; the covering of the structure is made with a semi-transparent plasticized cardboard; the base and the six inner pillars (these covered with the same canvas material) are instead in cardboard.
