The concept of unity is interesting when talking about an area of Arrecife that is currently unlinked. On the other hand, the urban fabric with the circumvallation could be treated from a larger scale urban regeneration operation and can generate a point of great impact for it.
The conception of the architectural object as an isolated element has no place in this area without previously considering the interrelation present. It might seem that architecture emerges as ‘isolated’ operations but from a more distant view, it will be appreciated that the relationship between architectural space and free space is the only leitmotif of the formal and functional organization of the area.
The relationships that occur between the program that is offered and the public free space, which are the proposed uses, expose this transformative capacity, that all space is public space. ArrecifeLAB is a space for creation, production, research and dissemination of projects through active collaboration.
ArrecifeLAB can be defined as a socio-cultural “cluster”: an open platform where to experiment and alter the creative and cultural production processes through teaching and developing projects. There will be exchange and collaboration of different profiles (scientific, technical) and levels of specialization (experts and beginners).
ArrecifeLAB “defines” a place that allows investigating novelties that explore new ways of creation, production and commercialization, fostering the relationship between professionals in the creative industries and the general public. Its users are students, researchers, professionals and amateurs from different fields that include art, technology, design, engineering, physics, biology, history, sociology, anthropology, education, communication, etc.
This LAB in Arrecife will be the centre of attention at all levels, socially linking people with diverse profiles and common interests, increasing synergies that often reveal the potential and creativity of multidisciplinary work.
How could this be translated into an architectural and urban model? How could this public space made to conform the ‘interiors’ and even the buildings themselves? At a general level, the architectural ensemble is related to the urban environment of hinge between two surfaces, two spaces: the industrial city to the north and the saltpans to the south (to two different spaces). The line that separates them generates spaces of horizontal relationship in vertical connection levels.
A closer staircase, go unnoticed in the landscape, leaving the salt pans charge all the leading role in the area. You could note that the constant intention is to maintain the set of salt pans in Arrecife with their original value in the salt heritage of the island; therefore, the areas linked to them are reclassified, maintaining their constructive integrity through their reconversion into a large urban park.

04 X ABOUT
Architect and designer, Luis Bautista Harris settles people on the center of his production and investigation lines. Interrelation between people and space –people and architecture, people and the territory, people with other people (society)– has structured his principal work pieces for the last years in a complex variety of representation ways.
He achieved his degree in Architecture and Urban Design at University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain, but recognizes that studying and working abroad has given to him new perspectives of the social and technical aspects of architecture and urban design.
